Types of Commercial Space Heating

Ben Winrow • September 27, 2019

Commercial spaces come in all shapes and sizes so it’s worth understanding what type of heating is best suited to your property. From office buildings, medical centres to shopping centres and retail stores, we can provide your space with the most cost and energy-efficient solution to meet your needs and in particular the needs of your employees and customers to ensure a productive and profitable business. Below is a summary of the different types of heating for commercial spaces:

Warm air heating

Sourced by gas, an oil-fired burner, hot water or an electric element, warm air heating distributes heat via a fan, evenly throughout your commercial space. Depending on the layout and size of floor space available, the heaters can be positioned on the floor, be mounted on the walls or on the ceilings. If you use a floor-standing model, a nozzle can be used to direct the warm air to the local area or they can be connected to a ductwork system to distribute the heat into a wider space. The main benefits of warm air heating are:

  • Stable room temperatures and improved fuel efficiency
  • Fast warm up
  • Low noise
  • Timer operated

De-stratification heating

De-stratification heating is used alongside warm air heating to recycle air which rises to the top of the building. Combined with warm air heating, a de-stratification fan returns warm air from the roof space back to the occupied space. This is, in turn, reduces energy waste and costs.

LPG heaters

LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) is considered a clean and environmentally friendly source of energy. The two most common types are propane and butane and it is produced during natural gas processing and petroleum refining and stored in gas bottles or tanks. LPG heating is perfect where there is no gas supply available with the added bonus of cleaner and lower fuel emissions. The main benefits of LPG heating are:

  • Lower fuel emissions
  • Reduced energy costs
  • Easy to store and transport
  • Compatible with many different appliances
  • Can be used instantly

Radiant tube heating

Radiant tube heating heats people and objects without warming the air and a relatively small heating capacity can keep a room at a consistent temperature. The heat which is emitted from infrared radiation from the radiant tubes and specifically ensures comfortable heating in drafty rooms. The main benefits of radiant heating are:

  • Long period of retained heat
  • Can be switched on and off easily
  • Good for old and poorly insulated buildings
  • Energy efficient

Purchasing and installing a commercial heating system is only the beginning of utilising a new system. The maintenance of heating systems is arguably one of the most crucial elements in ensuring optimal performance, the lifespan of the equipment, and reducing operational costs in the running of a commercial heating system. Importance of Regular Maintenance of Heating Systems To ensure optimal performance, it is recommended that a maintenance program be adhered to based on the facility in which it has been installed and the equipment in place. The idea of preventive maintenance also plays a role in this, making sure that the commercial heating system is routinely inspected and maintained, allowing any small issues to be identified before they potentially become more costly issues down the track. While you may be thinking that sticking to a routine maintenance schedule may not be important, there are certainly downsides to not maintaining your commercial heating system in place. Some challenges that can be experienced include increased wear and tear, more energy can be consumed with outdated and non-maintained systems, poor insulation can lead to wasted energy, and unbalanced heating across areas of the commercial space.
